Ashraful and Rahim unbeaten partnership guide Bangladesh scored 438 for 4 on Day three


Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim made brilliant unbeaten hundreds in a record partnership as Bangladesh commanding third day of the First Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Sunday.

Mohammad Ashraful scored unbeaten 189 runs , This was the highest score by a Bangladeshi in Test Matches and Rahim made a career best undefeated 152 runs as the tourists made 438 for 4 in their first innings at stumps in reply to Sri Lanka's 1st Innings total 570 for 4 declared.

This 261 runs unbeaten partnership was Bangladesh's highest stand for any wicket in Tests Matches, the before best partnership being 200 runs for the 2nd wicket between Tamim Iqbal and Junaid Siddique against India in Dhaka in 2010. Bangladesh also passed their previous highest total of 413 against Sri Lanka in Tests.

The Bangladesh avoided the follow on in the third session, now trail by 132 runs with six wickets left. Mohammad Ashraful played his last Test in December 2011, smashed one six and 20 fours in his sixth Test century, and the fifth against Sri Lanka, while Rahim hit one six and 18 boundaries in his second Test hundred.

Debutant Mominul Haque also impressed, scoring an 83-ball 55 with nine fours. He added 105 for the third wicket with Ashraful before being caught at first slip by skipper Angelo Mathews off paceman Nuwan Kulasekara. Sri Lanka strike again when left-arm spinner Rangana Herath removed Mohammad Mahmudullah stumped for no score to reduce Bangladesh to 177 for 4 before Ashraful and Rahim rebuild the innings.
