Chennai: Former Queensland fast bowler and Australian domestic bowling guru Joe Dawes will take over as India's bowling coach following the conclusion of the CB Series, the Indian board (BCCI) has confirmed.
In a decision taking at the BCCI's Working Committee meeting in Chennai on Monday, it was decided that Eric Simons would be relieved of his duties at the end of the ongoing tri-series in Australia.
"Joe Dawes has been appointed the bowling coach of the Indian team for a period of two years," BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale said in a statement.
Dawes, 41, took 238 first-class wickets in 64 appearances for Queensland between 1997 and 2005, finishing as his home state's eighth-highest wicket-taker. After injury ended his career in 2006, Dawes was appointed as Players' Professional Development Manager with Queensland Cricket. He also filled a part-time coaching role with the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Centre of Excellence in 2005, and was later bowling coach of Queensland.
In June 2011, Dawes was named bowling coach of South Australia and he was also worked with the Adelaide Strikers in the inaugural Big Bash League recently.
Simons joined the Indian team as part of Gary Kirsten's support staff in January 2010. However, after a run of eight consecutive Test defeats abroad in which India's bowlers failed to impress in friendly conditions in England and Australia, the BCCI has decided to crack the whip. He was named the head coach of the IPL franchise, Delhi Daredevils, for the 2012 season in December last year.
Simon had previously been Delhi's assistant coach, supporting Australian Greg Shipperd. Simons represented South Africa in 23 ODIs between 1994 and 1995, before coaching the national side from September 2002 to October 2004.
