Younis edges Pakistan to safety
DUBAI, Nov 16 - Younus Khan notched his 17th test hundred as Pakistan edged closer to drawing the first test against South Africa after reaching 284 for three on the fifth day of the first test on Tuesday.
Set 451 for victory after the visitors declared their second innings on 318-2, Younus took it upon himself to chase down the target and reached three figures by lofting a ball from off-spinner Johan Botha over deep midwicket for a six.
The right-handed batsman faced 187 deliveries in reaching three figures, striking nine fours and two sixes.
Younus was unbeaten on 102 off 191 balls.
The right-handed Younus and Misbah-ul-Haq batted throughout the session to take their fourth-wicket partnership to 127 off 41 overs to leave Pakistan 167 runs in arrears on a pitch which was becoming increasingly easier to bat on.
Pakistan skipper Misbah brought up his half-century in the over before tea to reach the break on 52 not out off 127 balls.
The South Africans made matters worse for themselves by dropping three catches on Tuesday, with Younus receiving two lives while on 16 and 70. Misbah was dropped at short leg when he had scored just eight.
Azhar Ali, who had made his way to 63 off 159 deliveries, eventually fell when he was bowled by left-arm spinner Paul Harris with a ball that beat the batsman's defensive prod to peg back his off stump.
